What is fresh royal jelly?
Royal Jelly is not the milk of the queen bee because bees are insects that cannot produce milk. In fact, fresh royal jelly is a combination of honey, bee pollen and enzymes of worker bee , creating a thick nutrient. It has an ivory-white, buttery-thick consistency, and will be secreted from the jaws of worker bees to feed queen bee and young larvae.
Why is royal jelly the rarest among bee products?
There are thousands of worker bees in a hive, but there is only one queen bee. The larvae fed with this special food have an average lifespan of 5 to 6 years, 40-50 times that of worker bees and are capable of producing 2,000 eggs/day.
The larvae that are raised to become worker bees can only eat royal jelly for the first 3 days, then be fed pollen and honey to maturity by worker bees.
